Are Large Publications a Waste of Time? Here’s What the Evidence Says
Is it time to bust the myth that publications are better than self-publishing?
If you want to maximise your chances of success on Medium, you should publish in publications. And large publications are better than small publications.
Right?
Well, that might have been true once upon a time, but not anymore. Not according to the research I’ve just done.
Why did I do this?
For a while, I’ve suspected that large Medium publications are not as good as we might expect them to be. It became evident that if a publication has 50 times as many followers, that doesn’t equate to 50 times as many reads. Not even close.
So, I started to wonder whether smaller publications were better. With fewer other writers to compete with for views, your stories might have a better chance of being seen.
I’ve also noticed that some of my self-published stories have done very well. So then I started to wonder whether publications are even necessary at all anymore.
