As far as the algorithm is concerned, tags can function the same way publications. I'm glad I'm not an editor for a publication. It seems like a lot of unnecessary unpaid work.
My highest earning articles lately (by a LONG way) have been self-published. It seems that if you write something that people want to engage with, they will find it and engage with it. If you write something people don't want to engage with, it doesn't really matter what publication you submit it to, it's still going to flop.
These days, the main purposes of a publication are to get the editing help of the editor, and to be part of a community. Getting loads of views isn't always a guarantee.
