How Joining an Improv Group Turned Me Into a Better Version of Myself

It taught me how to be more spontaneous and “in the moment”

I’m an introvert and a deep thinker. I’ve never been particularly spontaneous or a performer. I’ve often struggled to “think on my feet”. In fact, I like to plan stuff. I like routines and thinking about things in advance.

That all started to change in Autumn 2018 when a friend mentioned they had been going to an improv group. It sounded fun to me, and I was at a point in my life where I was looking for something new, so I decided to give it a try.

The first time I went along, it felt very difficult

The whole process of trying to quickly think of things to say in the moment felt like a huge strain on my brain. By the end of it, I had a tension headache.

But I also enjoyed it, so I returned the following week. The second session was still a strain, but less so. I kept going every week, and each time it felt a little bit easier. Then eventually, after a couple of months, I realized it was no longer a strain at all.
