I agree that it's stupid behaviour in that situation, but that does not necessarily mean the people are stupid on the whole. Just as an autistic person's behaviour may seem stupid in certain situations, that doesn't mean they are a stupid person on the whole.
For many non-autistic people, social connections are powerful, and people are naturally drawn towards each other. A person could be extremely intelligent overall and still make the mistake of being drawn towards socialising, even at the expense of road safety. Because not everything is a logical decision.
Intelligence is not a black and white thing where somebody is only intelligent if everything they do makes perfect logical sense for every situation they are in. Humans have mental blind spots.
Saying "they are STUPID, plain and simple" is a very autistic, black and white way of looking at things. Because that view immediately writes off everything else about that person.
This is the great irony here because from a non-autistic viewpoint, such a view could be considered stupid. Isn't this the opposite of what we should be doing? We shouldn't judge a whole person based on one thing (or a few things) that they do wrong. Isn't that exactly the problem that autistic people face? We're no good at interacting with people, so we get viewed as being failed people. Please don't make same the mistake when judging non-autistic people.
I understand the joy and benefits that come from finally getting an autism diagnosis. But please don't make the mistake of thinking that you're right and the rest of the world is wrong.
