I can understand why some writers would take that route. They would rather spend the time writing and editing than reading and responding to comments. They don't want to get involved with negative comments.

Personally, I love comments, even negative ones. I embrace them as a challenge - either to argue my point if I'm convinced I'm right, or to try to overcome my ego if I think they might actually have a valid point.

In fact, it's one thing I find off-putting about Vocal Media - no ability to comment. To me, a website without comments is like only half a website. The web is built for interactivity. Without feedback to your content, you're encased in your own bubble.
