I have read that being spiritually enlightened doesn't necessarily make someone a nicer person. Apparently, there are various spiritual gurus throughout history who have become enlightened but treated other people like shit.

Perhaps this is because when someone gets to a point where they feel like problems don't really exist, they might not see any reason to treat people well. Indeed, it could even be that such a person might consider that they are doing someone else a favour by treating them badly, because they regard it as good for their spiritual development to learn how to overcome unpleasant emotions that naturally occur as a result of being treated badly.

The thing is, in the real world, where most of us live, real problems can have real consequences. Supposing you really needed that money or you wouldn't be able to pay your rent? What if you had children who weren't going to get their next meal?

The most important thing in life is how we treat others. If someone's "spiritual enlightenment" causes them to treat other people badly, I call bullshit.

#1 rule in life: treat others how you would want to be treated. And if you've got to the point where you no longer care how you or other people are treated, something's gone wrong.

The sad thing is, that woman might one day piss off the wrong person. There are some people in this world we just can't afford to get on the wrong side of.
