I recently got upgraded to the new appearance. I wasn't expecting to like it, but so far I think I do.

I hadn't noticed the clapping thing, but I had noticed the image thing.

Also, publication headers have been massively shrunk, which is another clue that Medium and de-emphasising publications. I've got an article about this coming out soon, but I think Medium might be moving towards eventually phasing out publications.
