I think it is great to write like no one is watching. However, that's only half the story. What about editing? Many articles suffer from a lack of editing. I think the best advice is: write like no one is watching, but edit like EVERYONE is watching.

My first drafts are usually just brain dumps. They often come flying out of me with wild abandon. But I edit ruthlessly. Every article goes through multiple rounds of editing until eventually I can't find anything to improve.
