I think we're all trying to understand what the Medium algorithm is doing, but it's probably more complicated than we think. It is probably frequently being modified, too. It would be interesting to do an experiment, though. Yesterday I was thinking about maybe spending a month purely self-publishing to see what happens. Maybe that's too long. But if an article gets hardly any views, you can always just delete it and then submit it to a publication anyway.
