I'm in a similar position to you. I am a fairly recent convert to the Hemingway app.

At the end of the day, the best writing is the stuff that's easiest to read. The important thing is your message, not the words and sentences themselves. When I'm reading, I don't like to be distracted by the writing itself. I prefer it if I don't have to try to understand what it means.

Using fancy language just for the sake of it is like a guitarist doing an overly complex solo that doesn't fit the song. It's showing off. And nobody cares. Most music fans just want to hear a good song. Most readers just want to read a good story.
