Atheism, in its broadest sense, is merely the lack of a belief in a God. In that sense, anyone who doesn't actively believe in a God is an atheist.

But someone could equally call themselves an afairiest if they don't actively believe in fairies.

Antitheist could be a better word for someone who is totally closed off from the belief in a God.
