Interesting to read about your writing journey so far.

Regarding fungal infections, I've had one on one of my toes for many years. It was severely injured when I was 10-years-old, and has never been the same since. The nail was weird for years, but I didn't know it was fungus until well into adulthood.

A few years ago, I had three rounds of standard medication from my GP, then one round of extra hardcore medication prescribed by a hospital dermatoligist. I was told that if that didn't work, the only option left would be to surgically remove the toenail.

These days, I put a solution containing tea tree oil on it at least twice a day. It seems to somewhat keep it at bay but it never quite completely goes away.
