Is Medium in a Transition Period Leading to the End of Publications?

Medium could be intending to phase out publications. And we could be in a transition period while that happens.
Let’s look at the clues
Medium used to directly fund some of the big publications. Last year they stopped doing that. Around the same time, they introduced lists and replaced topics with tags.
The front page of Medium
It’s all about stories, tags (topics), and who to follow. In fact, topics (tags) are mentioned in two places — top (your topics) and right (recommended topics). So Medium is pushing tags.
Nowhere are publications mentioned, other than saying where each story is published. To view your publications, you have to first click your profile image. So Medium is NOT pushing publications.
Profile page
Your profile page has a Lists tab. Anyone can click that and see your public lists.
