It could be a disaster. Most adverts on news sites are too distracting. I have AdBlock installed. Some websites won't let you read them if you use an ad blocker. I avoid those websites.

Also, when advertising is involved, that can compromise on the integrity of the content. For example, if Medium ended up getting lots of its money from big drug companies, any stories criticising drugs or drug companies would likely get suppressed by the algorithm.
