🛑 I’ve Made a Big Decision About Medium

It’s time for things to change

It’s important sometimes to reassess things, to stand back and ask yourself some questions:

  • Why am I doing what I’m doing?
  • What do I hope to get out of this?
  • Is this giving me what I want?
  • Is this the best use of my limited time alive?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and here are my answers.

Why I joined Medium in July 2021

In the summer of 2021, I was desperately looking for ways to make money. I’ll be honest with you. When I first joined Medium, I was trying to abuse it in a spammy way.

I had seen several videos saying how you could earn affiliate income with a combination of Pinterest and Medium. The idea was to write some Medium articles containing affiliate links and then create loads of Pinterest pins linking to those articles.

It didn’t work, so I quickly abandoned that idea.

But then I realised it was possible to earn money just by writing articles for Medium. So I decided to try that instead, and I enjoyed it.

A lot has changed for me over the past two years

It’s worth briefly mentioning what else has been going on for me in 2021 and 2022.

When I first joined Medium, I was coming towards the end of a job I’d had for nearly eight years. Overlapping with that, I also started working for my friend’s eBay business.

By December 2021, my Medium earnings reached nearly $400. So, in January 2022, I decided to commit 100% to Medium. I wanted to see what would happen if I went all in and gave it everything, so I quit working for my friend. That work was annoying anyway, so I was glad to stop it.

But as the months went by, my Medium earnings weren’t continuing to grow. They went down a bit and hit a plateau for a while.

I realised I needed to do something else to bring in more money.
