On Medium, being controversial can earn you money.

This has certainly been my experience. When people are angry, they are more likely to write lengthy comments. This seems to count towards the reading time, which increases earnings.

But the key is not to annoy everyone. If everyone hates what you wrote, it probably means it’s shit. It’s best to have a good balance of people at both ends.

So, don’t deliberately be an asshole. Write confidently about a strong opinion that you know some people will disagree with.

If nobody disagrees with you, you’re probably playing it too safe.
