Napster wasn't the only service like this, it was just the most famous. I originally used one called Grokster, and then moved onto Kazaa. I probably used others, but I can't remember their names. The whole thing was very popular at the time because it was even before YouTube came along, so it was the only way to quickly get good audio and video entertainment for free.
