Sometimes I will structure my articles before I start writing. Other times I like my first draft to just be a stream-of-consciousness brain dump which I can later edit the crap out of. Sometimes my best ideas come flowing out of me when I give myself free reign. When you start with a structure, you're editing before you've even written anything, which can sometimes be helpful and othertimes can be too restrictive.
