This is what I wrote before I abandoned it:
I don’t know exactly how old I was when I first discovered grapefruits. But I became aware that the way people ate them was to cut it in half, put sugar on it, and then eat it with a spoon. Most people can only tolerate them with sugar on because they taste so sour.
Some time in secondary school, I became addicted to them. Or rather, I became addicted to the sugar.
I remember I got into the habit of coming home from school and immediately eating half a grapefruit with spoonfuls of sugar on it. Sometimes I would eat a whole grapefruit.
I didn’t realise at the time that grapefruits are an accidental hybrid between two other fruits - the sweet orange and the pomelo. I’d never heard of the pomelo before. Apparently, it tastes like a sweet grapefruit. So, it’s strange that combining that with a sweet orange creates something less sweet. That’s like if a handsome man and an average-looking woman had an ugly baby.
