Journal writing is awesome. Writing in a private journal is one of the best things you can do for your own self-development.

Putting your thoughts and feelings into words is extremely helpful. This is why psychotherapy can work so well. When we bottle things up, they fester inside us and cause trouble. When we put things into words, they become clearer and easier to understand.

Pen and paper vs electronic journaling

Some people recommend journaling with a pen and paper. I used to do it that way. I would buy lined A4 books and fill them with my messy handwriting.

However, there is one big problem with writing things on paper. What if someone reads it? I like to write very personal things in my journal, things which I don’t necessarily want other people to read.

In fact, if you’re not writing things that other people will find offensive or shocking, you’re probably not getting personal enough with your writing. For journaling to be truly beneficial, you need to be writing things that you feel you can’t say to other people.
