Why You Should Get Rid of the Word “Maybe” From Your Vocabulary
It clouds your thinking, sends unclear messages to people, and gets in the way of what’s important
“Maybe” is an annoying word.
Sometimes, people say “maybe” when they mean “yes”. But often, it’s a “no” that they don’t have the courage to commit to.
About ten years ago, I dated a very indecisive woman. Whenever I asked if she wanted to do something, she would reply with “maybe”. I thought she was just being shy, so I took it as my cue to be the man and make the decisions. But she then complained that I was too pushy, to which I replied, “Well, you never actually said no.”
To be clear, I’m not talking about sex. It was always clear that she gave consent to that. I’m talking about other things, like whether we were going to have a day out somewhere.
But my point is that saying “maybe” is a terrible habit. It’s much better to be clear with people. If you don’t want to do something, say no. Sure, it’s a bit uncomfortable at first, but at least you’re then on the same page.
But also get rid of “maybe” from your thought process. Make clear decisions. Either yes or no. If it’s not a clear “yes”, it’s a “no”. Recognise that and stand behind it. It makes…
