Yes, I had the exact same experience when it was my birthday in an office 16 years ago. My team leader asked if i would be bringing in cakes for people. I said, "No, I don't eat cakes". So she said, "Fruit?" So, I agreed to bring in fruit, but I remember one of my team mates said it was a bad idea because nobody would eat it. But people did eat it and loved it.
